5 Dover Quartet & David Shifrin

Dover String Quartet
David Shifrin, clarinet

Saturday, February 3, 2018, 8pm

Seligman Performing Arts Center
22305 W. 13 Mile Road, Beverly Hills

The Dover Quartet catapulted to international stardom following a stunning sweep of the 2013 Banff International String Quartet Competition, taking the Grand Prize and all three Special Prizes, and becoming one of the most in-demand ensembles in the world. Along with the top prize from the Fischoff Competition and the Cleveland Quartet Award, it's no suprise that the New Yorker recently dubbed them “the young American string quartet of the moment,” and The Strad raved that the Quartet is “already pulling away from their peers with their exceptional interpretive maturity, tonal refinement and taut ensemble.”

This concert features a special collaboration with clarinetist David Shifrin, one of only two wind players to have been awarded the Avery Fisher Prize since the award's inception in 1974. Mr. Shifrin is in demand as an orchestral soloist, recitalist and chamber music collaborator.  He has appeared with major orchestras throughout the U.S. and abroad, served as principal clarinetist of the Cleveland Orchestra and the American Symphony Orchestra (under Stokowski), among others, and has collaborated as a chamber musicians with such distinguished artists and ensembles as the Emerson and Tokyo Quartets, Wynton Marsalis, Emanuel Ax and Andre Watts.

The Dover Quartet returns to the Chamber Music Society after an immensely well-received performance in 2014 that brought audiences to their feet. Their alluring program includes Mozart's String Quartet No.15 from his set of six "Haydn" quartets, and two works with David Shifrin, a selection of Duke Ellington pieces arranged for quintet by David Schiff, and Brahms' beloved Clarinet Quintet.

"The Dover Quartet players have it in them to become the next Guarneri String Quartet — they're that good. Expert musicianship, razor-sharp ensemble, deep musical feeling and a palpable commitment to communication made their performances satisfying on many levels."

– The Chicago Tribune

"To the outside observer, the Dover Quartet’s rise to the top looks practically meteoric. Since winning all four prizes at the 2013 Banff International String Quartet Competition, the group has performed more than 100 concerts a year in locations spanning four continents."
