1 Brentano String Quartet & Vijay Iyer

Brentano String Quartet
Vijay Iyer, piano

Saturday, September 17, 2016, 8pm

Seligman Performing Arts Center
22305 W. 13 Mile Road, Beverly Hills

Since its inception in 1992, the Brentano String Quartet has been performing worldwide to popular and critical acclaim. Within a few years of its formation, the Quartet garnered the first Cleveland Quartet Award and the Naumburg Chamber Music Award, and in 1996 the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center invited them to be the inaugural members of Chamber Music Society Two, a program which has since become a coveted distinction for soloists and ensembles. In recent seasons the Quartet has toured regularly throughout North America, Europe, Japan and Australia. In the fall of 2014, the Brentano became the Resident String Quartet at the Yale School of Music, succeeding the Tokyo Quartet in that prestigious position.

In addition to performing the entire two-century range of the standard quartet repertoire, the Brentano Quartet has a strong interest in both very old and very new music, an interest reflected in this program, which extends four centuries from music of Bach to an almost-new work co-commissioned by CMSDetroit by the remarkable and innovative composer/pianist Vijay Iyer.

Grammy-nominated Vijay Iyer, described by Pitchfork as “one of the most interesting and vital young pianists in jazz today,” was named DownBeat Magazine’s 2015 Artist of the Year and 2014 Pianist of the Year, and was a 2013 MacArthur Fellow. His work “Time, Place, Action” for piano and string quartet draws from his wide-ranging interests in jazz, classical and contemporary music, blending improvisation with written-out music.

"The glittering clarity of the Brentano’s sound was intoxicating…A revelatory performance."
