5 Pacifica Quartet & Christopher O'Riley

Pacifica Quartet
Christopher O'Riley, piano

Saturday, January 21, 2017, 8pm

Seligman Performing Arts Center
22305 W. 13 Mile Road, Beverly Hills

Over the past two decades the Pacifica Quartet has gained international stature as one of the finest chamber ensembles performing today. The Quartet tours extensively throughout the United States, Europe, Asia, and Australia in the world’s major concert halls. Named the Quartet-in-Residence at Indiana University's Jacobs School of Music in March 2012, the Pacifica was also the Quartet-in-Residence at the Metropolitan Museum of Art from 2009 to 2012 – a position held previously only by the Guarneri String Quartet – and received the 2009 Grammy for Best Chamber Music Performance.  Highlights of the 2015-16 season include a performance at New York’s 92nd Street Y, the beginning of a two-season residency at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston, a residency for the Arizona Friends of Chamber Music in Tucson, and return visits to the major series in New Orleans, San Francisco, and Portland.

Acclaimed for his engaging and deeply committed performances, pianist Christopher O’Riley has a repertoire that spans a kaleidoscopic array of music from the pre-baroque to present-day.  Known to millions as the host of NPR’s From the Top, he performs around the world and has garnered widespread praise for his untiring efforts to reach new audiences. Christopher O’Riley joins the Pacifica for Schumann’s Piano Quintet, one of the composer’s most celebrated chamber works and a piece that established a model which would be emulated in later piano quintets by Brahms, Franck, Fauré and Dvoƙák, among others.

"Known principally for dispatching Elliott Carter’s knotty quartets in a single concert, the Pacifica Quartet of Illinois have many other claims to distinction. They play with clarity, perfect togetherness and the finest of tuning."
