Michael Malis & Marcus Elliot, jazz artists

ILP Residency, May 15-19, 2017

Michael Malis and Marcus Elliot are acclaimed Detroit-based jazz musicians in the early stages of their promising careers.  Michael Malis is an award-winning pianist and composer who has worked with many of Detroit’s most prominent jazz musicians. His debut recording, Lifted from the No of All Nothing, has been met with critical acclaim, with The Detroit Free Press calling it “an uncommonly mature and distinctive debut.” In his quartet with tenor saxophonist Marcus Elliot, Malis has maintained a four-year weekly engagement at Detroit’s iconic jazz club, Cliff Bell’s.

A gifted educator, Malis is a teaching artist with Living Arts Detroit, a nonprofit that provides high-quality arts experiences to youth in the Springwells Village neighborhood of southwest Detroit.

Marcus Eliot is a tenor saxophonist, composer and educator based in metro Detroit. He began playing in the Detroit jazz scene when he was 15 years old, and has worked with the region’s most distinguished jazz artists. His career has taken him all over the world to places including Cuba, Barbados, South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, Egypt, Jordan, Indonesia and many other countries. As an educator, he began giving lessons at the age of 14, and has since served as artist-in-residence at Troy High School, Director of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra’s Civic Jazz Band, and instructor at the Young Musicians Program in Berkeley, CA, which serves musically gifted students from low-income families in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Malis and Elliot are frequent collaborators and will work in a quartet, with two other colleagues, to present residency activities for CMSDetroit.
