Esteemed international violinist Daniel Hope returns to Chamber Music Detroit for a program with the Garth Newel Piano Quartet, ensemble-in-residence at a bucolic music center in the Virginia highlands of the same name. Their concert includes chamber works by Mahler, Beidenbender, and Dvorak, including the Czech composer’s beloved piano quintet.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

Daniel Hope, violin

British violinist Daniel Hope has enjoyed a thriving international solo career for more than 30 years. Celebrated for his musical versatility and dedication to humanitarian causes, he has been recognized with a string of honors including the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany and the 2015 European Culture Prize for Music.  Hope first drew notice as the youngest member of the Beaux Arts Trio, giving more than 400 performances with the esteemed ensemble during its final six seasons. Today he is a familiar face at the most prestigious international venues and festivals, from New York’s Carnegie Hall to Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw, and from Aspen and Tanglewood to Salzburg, Schleswig-Holstein – where Hope is the Featured Artist in 2023 – and London’s BBC Proms. Besides undertaking solo recitals, chamber concerts and concerto collaborations with the world’s leading orchestras and conductors, Hope directs many ensembles from the violin, succeeding Roger Norrington as Music Director of the Zurich Chamber Orchestra. An exclusive Deutsche Grammophon artist since 2007, he has an award-winning discography and is also a popular radio and television host who recently anchored the award-winning streaming and TV series Hope@Home.   In 2020, following in the distinguished footsteps of Kurt Masur and Joseph Joachim, Hope started his tenure as President of the Beethoven-Haus Bonn. An active presence on the national and international stage, the Garth Newel Piano Quartet has performed throughout the United States and on five continents, at such prominent venues as Carnegie Hall, Strathmore Hall, The Chautauqua Institution, and the San Diego Chamber Music Workshop.

The quartet believes strongly in promoting creativity, and holds an annual competition for rising composers aimed at bolstering the piano quartet genre. They regularly commission and premiere music of their contemporaries, such as Pulitzer Prize winner Paul Moravec, and David Biedenbender, for whom they have received the 2017 CMA commissioning grant.

The Garth Newel Piano Quartet maintains a strong dedication to education and to nurturing the next generation of chamber musicians. They serve as faculty and directors for the Emerging Artist Fellowship Program, which gives talented college-age musicians an opportunity to study and perform chamber music under the guidance of the Quartet and world-renowned guest musicians. Other prominent programs include an annual Amateur Chamber Music Workshop and Music in the Schools residencies around Virginia and as far as Georgia.
